Introduction


"Between 1945 and 1954, Vietnamese waged an anti-colonial war against France, and recieved $2.6 billion in financial support from the United States."
  • 1956, South Vietnamese, with American backing, refused to hold the unification elections.
  • 1958, "Communist-led, guerillas known as the Viet Cong had begun to battle the South Vietnamese goverment.
  • To support the South goverment the United States sent in 2,000 military people (then in 1963 this number grew to 16,300 people.)

"The military condition deterioted, and by 1963 South Vietnam had lost the fertile Mekong Delta to the Vietcong."

1963, war had escalated, air force strikes on North Vietnam and ground forces, which numbered in 536,000 in 1968.

From 1968-1973 efforts were made to end the war through diplomacy.

  • Januarary 1973, an agreement had came through.
  • U.S. forces were released from Vietnam, and U.S. prisoners were released also.

1975 South Vietnam surrendered and North and South rejoined once again to make Vietnam whole!
